Idyll time in the picturesque Philippines

Idyll time in the picturesque Philippines

"The Beach, by Alex Garland, is a must-read book in traveller circles. Before it was turned into an overblown Hollywood movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, The Beach captured the idea of the traveller's paradise.

Ewan McGregor was originally supposed to star in the film adaptation about a British backpacker who stumbles upon a secret beach in Thailand, a Utopia free of Lonely Planet-clutching hordes. Filmed on the southern Thai island of Koh Phi Phi, there's a little known fact about both the book and movie: Thailand wasn't the inspiration for either - it was El Nido, a picturesque region on one of the thousands of islands in the Philippines, and one spared by the recent typhoons and flooding.

And Bacuit Bay in southwest El Nido is probably the most beautiful place I've ever seen. Crystal-clear warm seawater, sharp limestone cliffs, luminous tropical fish, sea turtles, white powdery beaches, sparkling lagoons, coconut trees and world-class diving abound."

On the list: Bacuit Bay, El Nido, Palawan.

Antique window pane

This antique window pane was taken at Casa Unisan at Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan. A collection of old houses relocated & re-built; which would have otherwise been lost to history. This is the next best thing to preserving them at their original sites.

Casa Unisan's original owner is Antonio Maxino and was built in 1839 at Unisan, Quezon.

House pictures here and here.

80's is back again...

One lazy afternoon wandered off to the Powerhouse Museum to see Benini's photo exhibit, and part of another exhibit is an exhibit: The 80's are back. If you know the era, Rubik's cube is part of the craze much like the disco and the emerging video games. It's nice to go back, for once on this great time: the 80's!

Whale of a memory...

One of the first memories of Disneyland... when my dad in the mid-60's went on a working holiday/training in the US and came back with lots of pictures from Disneyland in LA. One of them is a picture under/inside this whale's mouth. Back then, it wasn't flooded with water nor part of any rides. Unless this is a different whale altogether... but I distinctly remember this same whale!
